  7. Thank you for trying Network LED. This file includes information on 
  8. Network LED features and how to contact Pragmatica Software 
  9. Limited.

  11. Introducing Network LED
  12. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  13. The main purpose of this program is to simulate the network card 
  14. lights that flash every time your computer sends or receives data over 
  15. the network. The Network LED appears on the Windows 95 task bar 
  16. as a two button icon. Red button represents receive packets. Green 
  17. button represents send packets.

  19. I run it for some time on different machines and didn't see any 
  20. problems or performance decrease. When Network LED is running the 
  21. System Monitor will show much higher CPU utilization, however it 
  22. will not affect the overall performance of the system as Network LED 
  23. runs at lower priority. If you find any bugs or have any ideas how to 
  24. improve it, let me know.

  45. Unzip the distribution file in a temporary directory, run Setup, start 
  46. the program NETLED.EXE and enjoy it.

  48. The product is composed of 3 files:
  49. NETLED.VXD    VXD that monitors network activity.
  50. NETLED.EXE    Win32 application that displays the monitor    
  51.         lights on the Windows 95 task bar.
  52. README.TXT    this file.

  54. Setup will copy NETLED.VXD and NETLED.EXE to c:\Program 
  55. Files\Pragmatica\Network LED\. It will also create a shortcut in 
  56. StartUp folder. If you experience any problems, terminate the 
  57. NETLED.EXE. To permanently remove it from your system  run 
  58. Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs and remove Network 
  59. LED.

  61. Due to size constraints I also distribute the program without the setup. 
  62. In this case, just copy all files to any directory on your system. The 
  63. only limitation is that both NETLED.EXE and NETLED.VXD should 
  64. be in the same directory.

  66. NETLED.EXE uses the shared version of Microsoft Foundation Class 
  67. library. The file mfc40.dll must be present on your system. It is 
  68. distributed with Windows 95 so it shouldn't cause any problems.

  70. HOW TO USE IT
  71. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  72. Run NETLED.EXE. The Network LED icon will be added to the 
  73. Windows task bar. If you would like the program to be automatically 
  74. loaded at Windows startup create a shortcut in the Windows/Start 
  75. Menu/Programs/StartUp folder. Press the left mouse button on the task 
  76. bar Network LED icon to activate a popup menu. The menu contains 
  77. following options:

  79. About        Display about dialog box
  80. Turn off    Turn the Network LED off
  81. Priority    Set the program priority
  82. Exit        Terminate the Network LED
  83.  
  84. Changing the priority can improve the accuracy of the monitor but can 
  85. also affect the performance of the system. You should experiment with 
  86. different settings to find the optimal configuration. The default "Low" 
  87. priority is recommended.

  89. LIABILITY

  91. None whatsoever but I recommend that you practice safe computing.

  93. REGISTRATION
  94. ~~~~~~~~~~~~
  95. This program and its accompanying files are classified as shareware. 
  96. They may be used on a single computer for a period of up to 30 days 
  97. for evaluation, after which time they must be removed from the system 
  98. or registered.

  100. Note: If you use an unregistered copy, the program will turn itself off 
  101. after 30 minutes.

  103. If you like the program you can register by sending $10 in US funds. 
  104. Don't forget to mention your e-mail address if you have one.

  106. Payment can be made in cash, money order or check. Payments in 
  107. checks and money orders must be in US dollars payable to Bohdan 
  108. Raciborski.

  110. In return you will receive a registration number that you should enter 
  111. in the registration field on the About dialog box (select About menu to 
  112. display About dialog box. Once registered the 30 minute limit will be 
  113. removed.

  115. CompuServe users can register on-line. To have the registration fee 
  116. added to your CompuServe bill use the CompuServe command GO 
  117. SWREG and follow the menus.  Network LED registration id is . 
  118. However, the convenience of registering it on-line is not free. It will 
  119. cost you another $5US.
